What is 3D Concrete Printing?
3D concrete printing is the process of using specialist 3D printing technology to build all kinds of residential and commercial structures. These structures include single and double-storey homes, as well as various architectural forms, such as wall panels, benches, tables, fountains, fences, etc.
Types of 3D Printing Concrete Devices
The two main types of 3D concrete printing devices are Gantry and Robotic Arm systems. Each system has its own unique advantages, limitations, and applications.
>> Gantry 3D Printers
Gantry 3D printers have a trolley that moves on the supporting beams, and the entire printer structure slides vertically on columns, giving it 3 axis of movement. These printers have large printing areas, sit around the intended structure, and can print the entire house in a single, continuous pass, which eliminates construction joints. They are more suited for large objects, such as entire 3d concrete printed house.
At AMCRETE we use a robust gantry-type 3D concrete printer with an impressive working area of 17m x 11m x 7m high. This allows us to print a whole single or double storey dwelling in a single pass.
>> Robotic Arm 3D Concrete Printing
Robotic Arm 3D printers have a moveable printer head and robotic arm with number of joints. It contains up to 6 axis, giving them greater flexibility and reach around.
Robotic arm holds out the printer head and moves it around, producing each layer of concrete until the object is complete. They have very good precision and able to produce very complicated forms. They are very mobile and quick to deploy and setup. But due to their small size and limited reach, robotic arms are better suited for building smaller, more detail-oriented objects. For example, complicated art structures and sculptures, landscaping monuments, benches and tables, fountains, fences, etc.
What Are 3D Concrete Printed Dwellings Made Of?
Our 3D concrete printed houses and structures are made from a proprietary mortar mix. This includes a mixture of cement, sand, fibers, and other materials, which give each structure its incredible strength, weather resilience, and insulation properties.
Building and components are ‘printed’ by continuously depositing layers of the proprietary mortar mix. This means it is possible to produce various shapes and designs that are usually cost prohibitive in traditional construction.
