What is 3D Concrete Printing?
3D concrete printing (3DCP) is the process of using specialist 3D printing technology to build all kinds of residential and commercial structures. These structures include single and double-storey homes, as well as various architectural forms, such as wall panels, benches, tables, fountains, fences, etc.
Sustainability of 3DCP
3D concrete printing offers a more sustainable approach to residential construction, combining lower whole-of-life carbon emissions with improved energy efficiency. A New Zealand study comparing 3D printed concrete, timber-framed and light steel-framed homes over a 50-year lifespan found that the 3D concrete printed house achieved the lowest global warming potential at 154.35 kgCO₂e per square metre. This represents approximately 20% fewer carbon emissions than the timber house and 25% fewer than the light steel-framed house across the assessed product, construction, end-of-life and material recovery stages.
The study also highlights the potential of 3D concrete printed homes to reduce ongoing household energy use. In the building performance model, the 3DCP house consumed 4,186 kWh of electricity per year, compared with 5,157 kWh for the timber house – a reduction of approximately 19%. Autodesk Green Building Studio modelling also indicated a potential 37% reduction in annual energy costs. These findings show how 3D concrete printing could support the development of lower-carbon, energy-efficient and more sustainable housing in New Zealand.
What Are 3D Concrete Printed Dwellings Made Of?
Our 3D concrete printed houses and structures are built from a proprietary mortar mix – a blend of cement, sand, fibres, and other materials engineered for strength, durability and weather resilience. Each wall is printed as a double or triple shell, and filled with reinforced concrete for seismic performance, exterior walls also have dedicated insulation core sandwiched between the printed shells for thermal performance.
Building and components are ‘printed’ by continuously depositing layers of the proprietary mortar mix. This means it is possible to produce various shapes and designs that are usually cost prohibitive in traditional construction.
